Official: Real Betis sack Mel

Real Betis have sacked Coach Pepe Mel with the club languishing at the bottom of the table.

The Verdiblancos have endured a tough start to the season, claiming just 10 points from their first 15 games.

And after their 2-2 draw with Rayo Vallecano at the weekend, President Miguel Guillen has confirmed that the tactician has been relieved of his duties.

A statement on the club’s official website read: “The club would like to thank Mel for three years of commitment and dedication, in which he has led us from the Segunda to the Europa League.”

Former Villarreal man Juan Carlos Garrido is the favourite to replace the 50-year-old.
