‘Courtois ideal to replace Valdes’

Former Real Madrid goalkeeper Bodo Illgner believes that Thibaut Courtois would be the ideal replacement for Victor Valdes at Barcelona.

The Catalans have been linked with a move for the Chelsea-owned ‘keeper, who is currently into a third season-long loan at Atletico Madrid.

The Belgian international has one former La Liga goalkeeper’s backing as first choice to replace Valdes, who is leaving the Camp Nou at the end of his contract next summer.

“The ideal replacement for Victor Valdes is Thibaut Courtois, but it is very complicated for him to arrive,” considered Illgner, in relation to Courtois’ apparent €40m price tag.

“He is a magnificent goalkeeper, though. Courtois would be the number one option to replace Valdes.”

Barca have otherwise been paired with a move for Illgner’s compatriot, Borussia Monchengladbach’s Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

“Ter Stegen is young, he has a great future.

“He has a lot of talent, he is like Oliver Khan, not as aggressive, but very motivated and plays nicely with his feet.

“He would be a good signing for Barcelona.”

The German also commented on Real Madrid’s continued issue with Iker Casillas.

“It is surprising that Iker Casillas is not the Real Madrid goalkeeper.”
