Spain: Bartra in for Fabregas

Barcelona defender Marc Bartra has been called up to the Spain squad to replace club colleague Cesc Fabregas.

Fabregas was a doubt to fulfil his Roja call-up for friendlies in the coming week with Equatorial Guinea and South Africa, after being forced off with injury during the closing stages of Barca’s 4-1 win at Real Betis on Sunday night.

The Spanish Football Federation now report that Barcelona’s medical services have sent across test results today after looking at the player’s right knee and recommended that he be rested for the internationals.

Subsequently, Vicente del Bosque has acted to release Fabregas and in his place call up teammate Marc Bartra.

The 22-year-old, who was a regular at Under-21 level up to this summer’s success at the European Championships, has yet to be capped with the senior side.

Bartra will meet up with the rest of the Spain squad on Wednesday morning.
