Varane: Team need to defend

Raphael Varane has reflected that Real Madrid must improve collectively in their defending to improve their goals against record.

Los Blancos head into Tuesday’s Champions League clash at Juventus having kept just three clean sheets in all competitions this season and having conceded eight times in their last four outings.

For their French centre-back, in line to start tonight in Turin, it is not just the back-line that need to improve.

“We can improve defensively and must do so collectively,” mused Varane to reporters this week.

“It is not just a matter for the defence, but for the whole team.

“Tonight we need a point to qualify, but we want first place in the group. They need a win and there is going to be a high pace to the game and we must respond to that.

“Who will I start with? I’m fine with both Ramos and Pepe. Both are good, although different.”
