Council want Athletic at weekends

Bilbao’s city council has today urged the Spanish Football League and Spanish Football Federation to schedule future Athletic Bilbao games for the weekends.

The Basques have so far played five League fixtures this season on a Monday evening and one on a Friday, whilst Week 14’s trip to Malaga is also set for a Monday.

Particular issue has been drawn from Bilbao’s city council on the games scheduled at San Mames on these days, which have generally also come with late night kick-offs of 10pm local time.

Today has seen the city’s authorities call on the LFP and RFEF to timetable more of Athletic’s games for the rest of the season over the weekend.

Socialist Party (PSE-EE) spokesman Alfonso Gil has highlighted the ‘grievances expressed by proprietors in scheduling games on a Monday at 10pm’ and also suggested they are being attended by ‘very few children’.

Gil’s admittance, however, that they cannot change much has been echoed by the city’s mayor, Inaki Azkuna, who commented that it won’t change for ‘the money from the television deals and they are the ones in charge’.
