Diego Costa: Decision already made

Diego Costa says that he has already determined his international future and hopes for the matter to be ‘resolved’ soon.

The Atletico Madrid man has proven to be the subject of an increasing tug-of-war between Spanish and Brazilian authorities, having qualified to represent either La Roja or his country of birth at international level.

Whilst both national teams’ Coaches have mused publicly in the last week of their desire to select the player, he has now confirmed his mind is already made up and action already taken.

“The decision on the national team has been made. Now is not the time to make it public,” Costa revealed to Canal + on Tuesday night.

“I have already spoken to who I have had to speak to and hopefully this will be resolved soon.

“"If I could say which, I would have done so long ago.”

The 25-year-old was talking after Atleti’s 3-0 Champions League win over Austria Vienna, in which he netted twice.

“The plan was to put a lot of pressure on their defenders from the first minute and that was the key. My first goal was beautiful.

“I always try to take advantage of the fact I'm really fast so I receive the ball and was able to overcome my marker.

“But the most important thing was the victory for the team, not whether I score – if I score of course I'm happy but the most important thing is being a champion.

“I don't think we are through to the next phase yet – we have to respect all the other opponents and the other teams so we are just taking things match by match.

“In the Champions League there are really good teams and this tournament has a lot of quality so it is normal that we will be under pressure at times as well.”
