‘I’m alongside best in the world’

Michu has celebrated being called up to the Spain squad: “I want to enjoy this experience, I am sharing the dressing room with the best in the world.”

The 27-year-old has been called in as a late addition to Vicente del Bosque’s plans after David Villa’s withdrawal on Sunday with an ankle injury.

“I had a call from my brother,” reflected Michu to Cadena SER this week, when asked how he found out he was the replacement.

“Then I received an email from the Press officer at the Spanish Football Federation with the details of when I will join up.

“Every Spanish player dreams about this and yet it is complicated. Few people can get to wear the shirt of the best team in the world.

“There are many absences, but there are still some great footballers in the squad. We will see if I am lucky and can play, whilst I am grateful to be called.”

Michu was asked of former Rayo Vallecano teammate Diego Costa’s impending involvement with La Roja too.

“I have not spoken with him, but we have exchanged messages. He is going great and I am glad.

“I want to enjoy this experience, I am sharing the dressing room with the best in the world.”
