Koke Resurreccion has admitted that Atletico Madrid’s primary focus this season is achieving third place in La Liga, rather than Champions League progression.
Atleti are balancing the two competitions for the first time in four years, alongside their defence of the Copa del Rey won last year.
Whilst the team have started strongly heading into their Champions League opener this Wednesday at home to Zenit St Petersburg, their newly-capped Spain midfielder has outlined where focus really is.
“Since the arrival of Simeone, the goal has been to go game by game,” reiterated Koke this week.
“But we are clear that our obligation is to the League. We have to finish third in the League to enter the Champions League and that is more stable for the club, it allows us to continue to grow.
“Our early form? We are very encouraged. And when they sing my name it encourages me to continue to fight and win the game.”
