Top clubs ‘open’ to winter World Cup

Europe’s top teams are open to a winter World Cup, according to European Club Association chairman Karl-Heinz Rummennige.

There have been huge concerns since Qatar were awarded the 2022 tournament that playing in the summer would be a health risk.

Many have also complained that moving the competition to the winter would upset three seasons of domestic football.

Bud the ECA leader, who represents all major clubs on the continent, has insisted that sides are happy to switch to a winter World Cup.

"It is probably better to play it in winter,” he told reporters.

"We're not in a hurry, there are still nine years to go.

"Having the World Cup in Qatar is not a mistake.

"After visiting Qatar at our last general assembly we had a good feeling about the organisation of a World Cup there."

Barcelona, Real Madrid, Valencia, Atletico Madrid, Villarreal, Athletic Bilbao, Malaga, Sevilla and Real Sociedad are all part of the European Club Association.
