Villa: Not here to replace Falcao

David Villa has commented that he does not intend to replace Radamel Falcao at Atletico Madrid, only to help the club improve.

The 31-year-old was brought to the Vicente Calderon this summer, on from the Colombian leaving after two very successful seasons to Monaco.

For El Guaje, though, the  task he believes he faces is not related to filling the boots left by Falcao.

“I think that Falcao is a player who is much loved and always will be for the fans of Atleti,” reflected Villa in conversation with Movistar.

“I believe that he and I are very different in our characteristics on the field. My mission is to try and make Atleti bigger, not to help forget any player.

“Can we go for the League? We are at a great disadvantage in contending for La Liga.

“Thereafter, we have to think of going game by game and trying to earn wins in a row and we shall see what happens.

“But on paper, we are at a disadvantage to the top two.”

Even so, Atleti took Barcelona to the edge in their two-legged Supercopa de Espana clash last month, losing on away goals.

“Defeat is never useful and less so when you play in a final. We were better than Barcelona in the two games, we have more chances.

“We defended Barca well and had a few scoring chances. Valdes was the best and that says everything. Whilst eventually, they won.”
