Madrid have lost in their bid to host the 2020 Olympic Games, after a vote in Buenos Aires on Saturday evening.
The Spanish capital went out in the first round, losing out to Istanbul after a tie-break situation.
International Olympic Committee members eventually opted for Tokyo to host the game, as they triumphed over the Turkish city with 60 votes to 36.
Some supporters of the Spanish bid were furious with the decision. Tennis player Feliciano Lopez said it was a "disgraceful decision" that showed the IOC had "no regard for fair play and values all other interests above sport".
It is the third time Madrid have failed in their attempts to get the Games.
