Ibai trusts in Ander Herrera

Ibai Gomez has reflected on his faith that Ander Herrera is committed to Athletic Bilbao and can put the failed move to Manchester United behind him.

The young midfielder was wrapped up in United’s unsuccessful bid to sign him from Athletic on the final day of the summer transfer window.

On from explaining his version of events this week, Herrera has received backing from the latest of his teammates to talk to the media.

“I listened to Ander and have been talking to him and he is very calm, he has been very sincere and I would ask the fans not to doubt Ander,” Ibai told reporters this week.

“The team is very involved in this, it has been a tough year and we have to pull together because it can help us to forget recent issues [in reference to Javi Martinez and Fernando Llorente’s exits].

“There is no news about Ander. He is an Athletic player and he has said that at no time was he looking to leave.

“We were calm and we still are, and there is no doubt that Ander is a player for Athletic and for us is excellent, he is a great player and a great person who can help us on and off the field.

“We know that off the field it was a tough year for all the cases that there were [Martinez, Llorente], and I hope that this year it is not so, it does not have to be that way.

“This case is different, Ander this week set the record straight and was honest as he always is.”

Athletic have enjoyed a relatively good start to the season, despite tasting defeat in Week 3 at the Santiago Bernabeu.

“We have a lot of room for improvement and aim to do so soon. Having six points from nine is not bad, having travelled to the Bernabeu, a difficult field.

“We could have scored more points, but it’s pretty good. We are going to keep with the positive and work to improve the negative.”

The team had a first training session at the new San Mames this week.

“It was amazing. We really are looking forward to when we will play a League game there in front of our people, it is a unique opportunity, as it was to say goodbye to the old San Mames.”
