‘Madrid will benefit from full-backs’

Retired Real Madrid right-back Michel Salgado believes that competition between Alvaro Arbeloa and Dani Carvajal will benefit his former club.

The 37-year-old, who spent 10 years at Madrid and made over 250 appearances, has cast his eye over Madrid’s options in his old position between Arbeloa and summer returnee Carvajal.

“They are two quality players,” enthused Salgado in conversation with Marca.

“One is very young, but he is reaching his level, he has strengthened and matured with experience abroad. The other, we already know about.

“Both are very high quality players, but with different characteristics. Carvajal provides greater movement of the ball, receiving and playing it out better.

“He is more offensive, whilst Arbeloa is more experienced and tactically does things very well.

“At the moment it seems that Carvajal has the advantage, as I understand that [Ancelotti] would like greater depth to the team.

“The most important thing is that Real Madrid can win much with two very different profiles for full-back.

“It is a situation that in other seasons they have not enjoyed. Most important is that Carvajal’s arrival, after doing well with Leverkusen, is going to come in very handy for this Madrid team.”
