Ronaldo brace sinks Chelsea

Cristiano Ronaldo netted twice as a dominant Real Madrid beat Chelsea 3-1 to lift the International Champions Cup in Miami.

A packed 67,000 crowd in the Sun Life Stadium saw Carlo Ancelotti’s men on the front foot right away against former boss Jose Mourinho’s team, and it was no surprise when they went ahead on the quarter-hour mark, left-back Marcelo firing into the bottom corner following Luka Modric’s through ball.

However, the lead lasted just two minutes as a clever exchange between Romelu Lukaku and Ramires saw the latter finish off the move by cleverly lifting the ball over Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas.

Ronaldo then had a chance to restore Real’s advantage, only to volley wide from Marcelo’s cross, before Frank Lampard had an effort saved by Casillas.

Nonetheless, Los Blancos got their noses back in front on 32 minutes when Ronaldo’s free-kick found the back of the net after he had been brought down by Branislav Ivanovic.

Having enjoyed a decent spell of pressure just after the break, Chelsea found themselves even further behind on 57 minutes when Ronaldo headed past Petr Cech after being superbly picked out by Isco.

In a particularly strange moment, a supporter then invaded the pitch and hugged and chatted to Ronaldo as the Portuguese star attempted to get him to leave the playing area.

After that, Madrid were unlucky not to increase their lead when Angel Di Maria’s volley went wide of a post and substitute Alvaro Morata’s injury-time strike was disallowed for offside.
