San Mames’ arch set for relocation

Athletic Bilbao’s board of directors have approved the club’s intention to relocate the famous arch at the old San Mames ground.

This summer has seen the stadium’s demolition ahead of Athletic’s planned move to San Mames Barria next door from the coming campaign.

It was determined that the famous archway that characterised the main stand, built in the early 1950s, would be saved and a new use determined.

The club have confirmed this week that a board meeting has approved relocation of the arch to their training facilities at Lezama.

Wednesday will see the landmark taken down from its current position and transported across, weather permitting.
