More than a million people reportedly took part in continued anti-government protests in Brazil overnight.
Angered by the state’s funding of hosting the Confederations Cup this summer, the World Cup in 2014 and the Olympics in 2016, protestors have been demonstrating and rioting throughout the week.
Increased presence of forces has been felt at this summer’s Confederations Cup games, with the protests having spilled over into violence.
Security forces patrolled outside and in the surrounding areas of the Maracana yesterday, host to Spain’s 10-0 win over Tahiti, whilst Uruguay’s later 2-1 win over Nigeria in Salvador saw clashes outside the ground.
Protests were reportedly held in over 100 cities across the country on Thursday night, whilst in Rio de Janeiro, rubber bullets and tear gas was fired at groups approaching the City Hall, with 29 reportedly injured as a result.
One fatality as a result of the protests has been reported, when an 18-year-old man was run over by a car that broke through a barricade in Sao Paulo state.
