Alonso to avoid surgery

Real Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso will reportedly not have to undergo surgery on a persistent groin injury.

The 31-year-old has been struggling with the complaint for a number of months and has had to pull out of Spain’s Confederations Cup squad to try and recover full fitness.

That decision, however, is apparently reason enough for Madrid’s medics to proceed with a conservative approach to Alonso’s treatment.

Marca report that had Alonso gone out to Brazil and aggravated the injury further, then he would have likely required surgery that would have hit him with a six-week lay-off.

However, the club’s expectation is that a non-surgical approach will allow the player to return to full fitness by July 15, when Real Madrid reconvene for preseason training.
