Aguirre never doubted staying

Javier Aguirre says that he had no doubt that he would agree to stay on as Coach of Espanyol this summer.

The Mexican came in last November and turned around the Catalans’ fortunes, pulling them up from bottom of the table to mid-table security.

However, negotiations over extending his contract drew speculation due to the number of weeks it took for an agreement to be reached.

“From the moment I passed through the door at this club, I realised the significance of Espanyol, and not only in Spanish football,” Aguirre stated to reporters this week.

“From the first note I was in good hands. The President has always answered the phone and I have spoken every day with [sporting director] Oscar [Perarnau], there was no doubt that I would continue.

“Our objectives? The first goal is to secure League survival, then we look upwards. Planning is underway, since the last six games of the season.”
