Fernando Vazquez was downbeat in assessing Deportivo’s relegation from the Primera Division, but promised they will be back, and perhaps with him.
The club’s third Coach of the season was unable to oversee Depor’s mathematical survival, as a 1-0 defeat at home to Real Sociedad combined with Celta Vigo’s 1-0 win over Espanyol sent them down to the Segunda Division.
“My face is a reflection of those in the dressing room,” reflected an initially downbeat Vazquez afterwards.
“There has been such an effort that began three months ago together, that commitment, that we took as our slogan, that ‘yes we can’…the effort has not been enough.
“We were close, but in the end we were unable to achieve it. We have missed a great opportunity to continue in the Primera Division, knowing how important it was for the club.
“If I stay with something positive, I believe that we will be back. It is very difficult to say that you have lost, and when you have had a stadium like we did with the Riazor.
“It was impressive, the ongoing support, tremendous to the end. On a sporting level we are in the Segunda Division, but we have a great opportunity to strengthen ourselves and at this moment the club needs to drop down. We will be stronger, more united and healthier.”
Vazquez was asked if this meant he was staying at the club next year.
“I’m not saying if I will continue, I’m talking about Deportivo. I do not want to talk about my future now. The moment is not now to think about it, I’ll reflect on what I saw today [Saturday].
“The disappointment aside, we have a great treasure in this fanbase. They are a treasure that will support us so that the club can pass through this difficult moment, return with a young team for the future, this is the future of Deportivo and it is exciting, beautiful.
“The project will engage a lot of people. I am talking about the project that the President will direct, I would love to direct it, to continue at Deportivo and I guess I will be Coach. But right now there is nothing definitive.
“The President, the club and I are sentenced together. We have not discussed the Segunda, I had an agreement in the Primera and I thought we would be there.”
