Del Bosque to confirm Spain’s 23

Vicente del Bosque is expected today to confirm his final 23-man Spain squad to take to the Confederations Cup in Brazil.

Del Bosque announced a provisional 26-man Seleccion on Monday ahead of travelling out to the South American continent for this summer’s eight-team tournament.

With the final round of League fixtures now complete in Spain, the 62-year-old is anticipated as making his final cut today, before the squad take the trip out to the United States on Tuesday.

There La Roja will begin preparations for the Confederations Cup with friendlies against Haiti on June 8 in Miami and then against the Republic of Ireland on June 11 in New York.

Nacho Monreal, Javi Garcia, Benat Etxebarria and Roberto Soldado are seen as fighting it out for a single spot in the 23.

That is because Garcia and Benat’s initial inclusion was thought as a failsafe over doubts about Xabi Alonso and Sergio Busquets’ respective discomfort with injury.

Busquets returned to action in his side’s 4-1 win over Malaga yesterday and Alonso is expected to be passed fit for inclusion too, meaning that the two back-up midfielders are up against full-back Monreal and striker Soldado for the final seat on the plane.
