Cannavaro: Ancelotti link an honour

Fabio Cannavaro has reflected on the ‘honour’ it would be to assist Carlo Ancelotti at Real Madrid next season.

The retired World Cup winner has been linked with joining Ancelotti’s backroom staff at the Santiago Bernabeu this summer, should the Italian tactician make the move himself from Paris Saint-Germain.

“To return to Madrid would be a great honour for me. I have experienced life there as a player and it would be awesome to return,” reflected Cannavaro to Marca.

“Working with someone at the level of Ancelotti would be phenomenal.

“Of course Carlo is ready for Madrid. He has won at Milan, Chelsea and now with PSG. Also, the players are happy with him.

“The support of the team is most important for a Coach and Ancelotti has always had that. That is the great strength of Carlo, plus the success he has had over his career.”

Cannavaro, who spent three years as a player at Madrid, also saw time during his playing career under Ancelotti at Parma.

“He is a great guy in the dressing room, but also very hungry for success. I was fortunate to work under him at the start of his career at Parma and you could see that he had a lot going for him.

“He has experience, titles and a lot of ambition. He has everything to succeed in Madrid.”

The former defender’s brother Paolo currently plays alongside reported Madrid target Edinson Cavani at Napoli.

“Cavani is a complete striker. He participates much in the game, both in defence and attack and he has a great killer instinct.

“In my opinion he is a machine, a great player. He is hungry, strong and talented.”

Cannavaro was asked of outgoing Coach Jose Mouriho’s time at the Santiago Bernabeu.

“For me it is a shame that the adventure of Mourinho at Real Madrid has ended like this. He is a great Coach and I believe he has done a great job.

“He has won and has reached three Champions League semi-finals. I truly believe that the club should thank him.”
