Betis striker Ruben Castro arrested

Real Betis’ leading scorer Ruben Castro has been arrested in connection with an alleged assault on a former girlfriend.

According to Diario de Sevilla, the 31-year-old was detained by police following training after his former partner claimed he had slapped and punched her after an altercation between the pair.

Castro, who denied allegations of physical and sexual assault contained in the complaint, appeared in court on Tuesday evening and must now comply with a restraining order of 300 metres and a ban on any contact with the plaintiff.

The alleged incident occurred in the early hours of Monday morning when Castro and his former girlfriend came across each other in a cocktail bar in Sevilla following Betis’ 4-0 victory over Real Zaragoza.

The Las Palmas-born player has scored 18 goals for Los Beticos this season and has been instrumental in helping Pepe Mel’s men to the verge of a Europa League place.

Betis are two points behind sixth-placed Malaga going into Sunday’s final game at Levante, where they will need to take all three points and hope their Andalusian neighbours slip up away to Barcelona.
