Espanyol’s Victor Alvarez discharged

Espanyol defender Victor Alvarez has been discharged from hospital after a heart operation to repair his aortic valve.

The 20-year-old [pictured right], who made his Los Pericos debut in a 1-0 away loss at Levante in March 2011, went under the knife last Thursday but, according to AS, he has made what was described as a ‘meteoric’ recovery.

Alvarez’s heart problem was detected by Espanyol’s medical team before the start of the 2012-13 campaign. However, it was not thought serious enough to prevent him making 18 La Liga appearances and he was able to train and compete without problems.

He is now expected to be out of action for a further four or five months, when he will convalesce at home, ruling him out of this summer’s FIFA Under-20 World Cup.
