Montanier to leave La Real?

Real Sociedad Coach Philippe Montanier has reportedly agreed to return to Ligue 1 for next season to take charge of Rennes.

The Frenchman has La Real on the verge of Champions League qualification with two rounds of League action to go, but he has yet to put pen to paper on a new contract at Anoeta.

Whilst the club’s board and sporting director are seen as united in trying to agree terms with Montanier, and as a priority, Rennes have increasingly been linked with having made a counter-offer.

The Ligue 1 outfit were believed set for Montanier’s answer this weekend to a presumed three-year contract proposal – longer than the reputed one-to-two years Real had tabled and better paid – and reports in Spain and France today suggest that he has accepted.

Montanier is reported as having given his ‘yes’ to Rennes’ owner Francois-Henri Pinault after Real’s 2-1 win at Sevilla on Saturday night.

Pinault is head of multinational holding company PPR and has a net worth of €12bn.

Montanier’s assistant at Real Sociedad, Michel Troin, is expected to also make the move, having reportedly been set to quit the Basque Country club in the summer regardless, out of a desire to return home to France.
