Mourinho ‘turned down United’

Jose Mourinho reportedly turned down the chance to succeed Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United for family reasons.

Ferguson confirmed this week his intention to retire from the Old Trafford bench at the end of the season, after more than 26 years in charge.

Whilst David Moyes has been announced as his successor, Portuguese outlet Record say that Real Madrid’s Mourinho was first offered the post, but turned it down.

It is believed that the 50-year-old, who has previously been suggested as a possible successor to Fergie, but seen in the British media as overlooked for the position, said no to this alleged offer due to a reluctance to uproot his family from their intended location of London to settle in from the summer.

The assumption follows from Record that Mourinho is leaving Madrid this summer to take the Chelsea job once more.
