Ronaldo after full image rights

The dispute between Cristiano Ronaldo and Real Madrid over a new contract reportedly centres on the player’s image rights.

The Portuguese commented back in September that he was ‘sad’ at the club, prompting a season’s worth of speculation that has ranged from a poor relationship with certain teammates to a perceived lack of support at public events from Madrid to a contract renewal deadlock.

With rumours persisting that he may be the subject of summer transfer bids from Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester United, Terra today allege the reason behind 28-year-old’s believed willingness to hear those proposals.

It is understood that the player and club cannot reach agreement over the Portuguese star’s image rights, with CR7 said to be pushing for 100 per cent ownership in any new contract signed.

The club’s refusal to oblige reportedly has Ronaldo threatening to run down his contract to June 2015 before leaving on a free transfer.

The situation also has his agent Jorge Mendes apparently talking to Manchester United in particular about a possible transfer, encouraging their reputed €60m plus a player bid, but arranging that instead of Luis Nani moving to the Santiago Bernabeu, that Javier Hernandez is offered as more interesting bait to Los Merengues.

Ronaldo is seen as open to a return to Old Trafford this summer, but equally to the prospect of improved contract offers from a range of clubs in 2015, if he is a free agent.
