‘When I know who the President is…’

Ernesto Valverde has confirmed that he will only hold talks over a new deal at Valencia once he knows who the new President will be.

Talks over a new contract for the Coach were started with Manuel Llorente, before his resignation last month over a difference of opinion with the new direction Los Che’s majority shareholders Fundacio VCF were taking.

A new President will be elected at Mestalla on June 4 and that is when Valverde says he will discuss his deal. It was rumoured he had spoken to sporting director Braulio Vazquez this week.

“Braulio has spoken with my agent, and with other people. But there is no further news,” affirmed Valverde to reporters today.

“As soon as I know who the President will be, I will talk to him on the same day. Until the date of June 4 we will not know who it is, but as soon as I do, I will sit down with him.”

The 49-year-old was asked of the possibility of a change in focus for Valencia next season, in light of financial pressures perhaps forcing the club to recruit from their youth team.

“The theme of the cantera, in my opinion, has to start from a belief and not an obligation. You have to think in the long term.

“And not because we are in a bad economic situation that we have to look to the youth team. There will be some that can move up to the first team and others that won’t.”

Valverde was talking ahead of Valencia’s home clash this weekend with Osasuna. Los Che are chasing Real Sociedad for the fourth and final Champions League qualification spot, but sit five points behind after defeat at Anoeta last weekend.

“If we pick up the 15 points that remain then we stand a good chance of reaching the Champions League, but I do not know how the other teams will do.

“Speculating ahead limits you a lot, we must think about the game on Saturday as we have no margin for error.

“After this weekend we will see how the table looks – if we win then we will be two points behind La Real before they play on the Monday.

“Osasuna are playing for their season, they are low in the table and the points are important to them.

“We will require a great competitive attitude, as we have always had.”
