Del Bosque stands by Casillas comments

Spanish national team boss Vicente Del Bosque has conceded that he was surprised by the backlash he received after praising Iker Casillas.

The Roja Coach came in for criticism from some areas of the Press after he claimed that the Real Madrid goalkeeper needed to be 'protected'.

But the 62-year-old has stuck by his initial comments, whilst also insisting that the shot-stopper will be in the Confederations Cup squad.

“I feel bad that perhaps people from Madrid have messed with him,” he told SER. “I am only defending the national team.

“I am just defending a Spanish national team player. We have to be fair to him.

“It is important that Iker is fit, but he will be with us whatever happens.

“Even if he's not fit, he'll travel to help everyone else.”
