Nosa explains derby gesture

Nosa Igiebor has apologised for his middle-finger gesture towards Real Betis fans, explaining that it was due to racist abuse received.

The midfielder scored Los Beticos’ last-minute equaliser in Friday evening’s Seville derby at home to Sevilla, but soured the moment by showing both middle fingers to the crowd.

“I want to apologise to the fans for a gesture that was not aimed at them,” Nosa posted via his Twitter account today.

“But I will not put up with the racial abuse I was receiving from a few mindless fans – my act was out of frustration.”

The 22-year-old has been criticised by Betis fans for his month-late return from Africa Cup of Nations duty, which reportedly earned him a significant fine.
