Casillas ‘competitive’ but…

Aitor Karanka has confirmed that Iker Casillas is back at a competitive level and will be called up this weekend for Real Madrid, but he won’t start.

The goalkeeper has been training for the past two weeks after receiving medical clearance during the international break, after two months on the sidelines recovery from surgery on a fractured hand.

Casillas’ exclusion from the last two Madrid matchday squads was explained by both Karanka and Coach Jose Mourinho as reflective of him not being at a competitive level yet.

Karanka, however, has confirmed that the player is now at a suitable level to be considered and that he will be called up for the squad to face Levante this weekend.

However, the assistant Coach also confirmed that he will not be starting the game.

“He is at a highly competitive level. Tomorrow he is not going to play, but I cannot say what will happen in the future,” Karanka told reporters today.

“We are looking for what is best for the team. Iker has done some more specific training. We are happy to have him for the final stretch of the season.

“Will he or Diego Lopez play as first choice? That is what we are paid for, it’s our job, above the debates and polls, the Coach’s job is to choose the side to play each game.

“It is in order to, rightly or wrongly, get the best out of each player. They are aware of that intensity.”

Karanka was asked about Arrigo Sacchi’s comments on Casillas’ attitude yesterday.

“I’m not going to assess whether Casillas trains well or not.”
