Terim: Referee made mistakes

Fatih Terim rued Galatasaray’s missed chances against Real Madrid yesterday, and also the performance of the referee.

The Turks had a couple of penalty appeals turned down during their 3-0 defeat in this Champions League quarter-final first leg, much to their Coach’s ire.

“I will not discuss the possible penalties, I never talk about referees, but the name of Real Madrid can affect some and sometimes the courage to whistle for clear decisions is lacking,” Terim commented at full-time.

“You could not say that it was just in his refereeing, but he has made many mistakes.

“Everyone in the stadium, except the referee, has seen that Ramos stepped on Yilmaz [in the second half, when Yilmaz was booked for diving in the penalty area].

“At this level you should not make mistakes. The first and second goals were from very basic mistakes.

“With Eboue and Drogba we could then not take advantage of very clear chances, if we had scored then it would have been quite different.

“Many of our players are very experienced and it is difficult to play at the Bernabeu in front of so many fans.

“The difference in quality between the two teams was shown. It’s there to see. Surely my players wanted to do more but they could not. They have tried.

“At 3-0 a miracle is needed to change things, but we will try to play well in Istanbul and to turn around the tie.

“I was not expecting this result but that’s football and you can find yourself in difficult situations, but we have the potential and the possibilities.”
