Diego Simeone reflected that Atletico Madrid’s first home defeat of the season was the result of the team expecting to score.
Atleti fell to a 1-0 defeat at the Vicente Calderon to Real Sociedad, their first reverse in the League at home since April 2012 and a result that ended a run of 14 consecutive home League wins.
“The game was intense in the first 20 minutes,” commented Simeone in his post-match assessment.
“We felt that the goal was going to come but from there we lowered the intensity. We could not move the ball quickly enough and we weren’t accurate.
“In the second half it was the same but the first goal hurt us.
“Tomorrow morning we will work trying to improve what we have to improve as a team. It will help us return to what we’re trying to do.
“They pressured us in the final third, played narrow and took their chance. They played a good game.”
El Cholo was asked of Xabi Prieto’s match-winning goal, which replays suggested was offside.
“I do not talk about referees. You guys [the media] are always critical, I guess you will be again this time…”
