Supercopa staying in Spain

Upcoming editions of the Supercopa de Espana will not be played in China, as reports indicate the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) have rejected the idea.

The RFEF had reached an initial agreement with a Chinese promoter to play five of the next seven editions of the traditional season curtain raiser in the Asian country.

This was seen as a marketing scheme to bring Spanish League football to a wider audience, in competition with the Premier League, who are market leaders in the Far East.

Heavily opposed by both Barcelona and Real Madrid, as expected participants in a majority of those games, the RFEF are understood to have decided in a meeting held on Monday to abandon the idea.

Also discussed by the executive committee in this meeting was reportedly the RFEF’s plans to introduce mechanisms to implement in the League, if a club were to dissolve due to financial issues midway through a season.
