Mascherano: No egos at Barca

Javier Mascherano has reflected on how he put aside his ego at Barcelona and how “those who are the greatest, who have made history, are the most humble.”

The Argentine signed for the Catalans from Liverpool in summer 2010 and has taken on a squad role, having runs in the first team, in a new position of centre-back, and runs out of the team.

“Since I arrived at Barcelona I have always had the mentality of trying to give the maximum I can, offer myself to the team and put my ego to one side,” reflected Mascherano in talking to reporters this week.

“I believe that in that sense things have gone well and I am valued – I have never complained when dropped or failed to recognise that the player who plays in my position is better than me.

“Learning here is learning every day, but if there is something that I have discovered, it is that those who are the greatest, who have made history, are the most humble.

“People like Xavi, Iniesta, Puyol, Valdes, Pique, Busquets… These players have not only won everything with Barcelona but they are also references for Spanish football, as champions of Europe and the world, and they live with a normality that I have not seen elsewhere.

“Barca are a special team. It is going to be very difficult to find a team of this magnitude in terms of humility.”
