Wakaso ‘no longer a story’

Javier Aguirre has reflected that Mubarak Wakaso has apologised for being late back to Espanyol and that ‘it is a story no more’.

The Ghanaian was fined and told to train separately on Friday, after returning two days late from Africa Cup of Nations duty.

For his Coach, though, the issue has been put into the past already.

“It has zero risk to the environment in the dressing room because he apologised and has accepted the consequences of our rules,” Aguirre explained today.

“It’s a story no more. There is no problem, he is our player and he is now training with a physio separate from the main group. If you go through a red light you don’t get labelled with a criminal record.”

Aguirre was addressing the assembled media in anticipation of Sunday’s home match against Real Betis. Los Pericos go into the fixture as the form side, albeit five places and eight points beneath the Andalucians in the table.

“They are the second best on the road in the League and they will make things very difficult for us. We must play well, balanced in defence and attack, organised and with intensity.

“It is not going to be easy, it will be a really, really difficult test. They have players who are fast and can score goals.

“My side will know that they are tremendously fast. We will have to be very attentive to them.”
