‘Rubin to decide tie in Russia’

Kurban Berdyev praised his Rubin Kazan players for ending Atletico Madrid’s home run and with only 10 men.

The Russians ran out 2-0 winners at the Vicente Calderon in the first leg of their Round of 32 Europa League meeting.

The result ended a run of 20 consecutive home wins for Atletico in all competitions and was secured despite the visitors playing the entire second half with 10 men, after Roman Sharonov’s second yellow card on 45.

“It was a really tough match and further complicated by the sending off of Sharonov. We were playing to get a good result and have managed it. We can decide the tie back in Russia,” reflected Coach Berdyev afterwards.

“We wanted discipline from the team in the second half, following the red card. With the extra man they forced us to play well.

“I am grateful for the efforts of my players. I want to highlight the great work of Rondon, who has worked to the limit of his strength.

“We played a game with a lot of tension that has required great discipline and co-ordination. It has been hard to defend a man down.

“Everything will be decided in Russia.”
