‘Valencia have discussed Aspas, but…’

Ernesto Valverde has confirmed that Valencia have discussed Celta Vigo striker Iago Aspas, but denied that they are planning the team for 2013-14.

Aspas have been strongly linked with a move to Los Che in recent months, with the club  reported as having already spoken to his agent about a possible switch this coming summer.

When asked on the subject at today’s Press conference, Coach Valverde was surprisingly open, even if he still looked to temper the transfer talk.

“Yes, it is true that Iago Aspas is a name that has been brought up at the club, along with others too,” commented the tactician to reporters.

“But we are not thinking about the team for next year, because if the question is that then the answer is no. If the question is whether he is a player of interest then for that there is no doubt.”

Valverde has been in charge at Mestalla for two months now and was asked of his intentions to stay on beyond the June 2013 expiry of his contract.

“We have not talked about my future. Now marks the two-month date since I have been here, we have done well, but the League is long and the winter is tough.”

Valencia travel out to play Aspas’ Celta Vigo this Saturday evening, before then hosting Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League Last 16 on Tuesday.
