Radamel Falcao has once more discussed his future at Atletico Madrid, his team’s current League position and their chances of a title fight.
The Atletico striker has been asked on every international break this season about transfer speculation surrounding his future and in preparing for Colombia’s friendly against Guatemala this Wednesday, again tackled the issue.
“I have three years left on my contract at my club, I am happy and satisfied,” Falcao told reporters this week.
“Obviously in sporting terms I have the ambition to continue to progress and do better than this season, to keep fighting at the top of the Spanish League, the Europa League and in the semi-finals of a tournament like the Copa del Rey. I just think of Atletico.
“We will continue fighting for the League while it remains a mathematical possibility. We know it is hard because Barcelona are having a faultless season.
“It is clear to us what we want, which is to qualify for the Champions League, but if we can fight for the title, then we will.
“The lead over Real Madrid? We have a very good seven-point lead over our rivals, who in many years have been superior to us in terms of results.
“We wish to continue to maintain the distance, but it does not concern us if we are in front or behind.”
The striker also reflected on his ambition to win things at an individual level, as well as his progress in returning to full fitness after a thigh injury.
“I’ve always longed to be in the position that I am in now. I’ve reached a level where few can get to and I want to keep working to stay there.
“The Spanish League is very competitive and that makes you better every day, to keep competing.
“My injury? I am here [with the national team] still recovering from a hamstring injury, and I had planned with the medical staff at Atleti not to play the whole game at the weekend, but I feel good.
“I’m fully recovered, but it takes some time to get back to being 100 per cent and my best football.
“Colombia’s game will come in handy for me to get the minutes and get back on track.”
