Tebas: Match-fixing must be realised

The Spanish Football League (LFP) Vice-President Javier Tebas has asserted that in order to stop match-fixing, the problem must first be realised.

The European Union’s police agency yesterday revealed that they have evidence that around 380 matches across 15 European countries, at League, European and international level have been fixed.

Tebas, who last month revealed that he believes games in Spain ‘have been bought’ in recent seasons, reflected that he did not find Europol’s findings surprising.

“These cases take time to recover, this one has been investigated for over the past two years,” commented the LFP Vice-President to Marca today.

“It is a phenomenon that affects many countries and many competitions.

“The cheats should be removed from football, but we first have to admit that there is a problem.

“This disease is not admitted, so there is no cure for the patient yet. Some institutions are not yet aware of what is happening.

“There exists conspiracy and illegal gambling. It is at a small percentage, but in Spain there is also corruption.”
