Albelda to leave Valencia

David Albelda has confirmed that he is ‘95 per cent certain’ he will leave Valencia in the summer, after 18 years at the club.

The captain has endured an up and down season at Mestalla this term, but is back in favour under Ernesto Valverde.

Despite having spent his entire career – bar two season loans at Villarreal – at the club, the 35-year-old has told reporters today that he is almost certain he will be leaving in the summer, when his contract expires

“There is a 95 per cent chance I will not continue at Valencia when the season ends,” he revealed today.

“My idea would be to test myself abroad.

“I practically cannot contemplate being in Spain. But, we will see when the time comes and the situations that arise.

“Could I stay? You always leave a small door open, but it does not depend on the President or sporting director.

“I have always believed that I should leave at a time when it feels right. My first few months this season were complicated because I could not contribute anything.”

Albelda was talking ahead of preparations to welcome Barcelona to Mestalla this Sunday.

“We face the game with ambition, it is a challenge to try and win against Barca, there is potential. They are the best in the world, a fearsome opponent, but we have to hope that we can win.

“If we do not think we can win, that is not a good sign.”
