Granada sack Anquela

Granada have taken action to try to reverse their League position by sacking Coach Juan Antonio Anquela.

The 55-year-old, who was in his debut season in La Liga this term, has struggled to keep the Andalucian side away from the relegation zone throughout the season.

Despite picking up two wins and a draw in his last five outings, defeat at the weekend at Sevilla has seemingly forced the board’s hand and they have taken action on Wednesday morning.

“The board of Granada CF have sacked this morning the Coach Juan Antonio Anquela,” read a statement released on the club’s website.

“The sporting director of the club, Juan Carlos Cordero, has taken the decision on the Coach, who this morning was dismissed from the team at the training centre in Armilla.

“The club’s sports management are working against the clock to bring in a new Coach. Granada thank Anquela for his involvement and work and wishes him every success in his future career.”

Granada’s next five fixtures list three against relegation rivals Deportivo, Mallorca and Celta Vigo spaced between home fixtures with Real Madrid and Barcelona. Madrid visit this coming weekend.

Initial rumours suggest that Granada will turn to Lucas Alcaraz to replace Anquela. The Andalucian native debuted as a Coach back in 1995 with the club when aged just 29.

Most notably managing two top-four finishes in the Third Division during his three-year stint, Alcaraz has since had spells at a number of clubs including Recreativo, Racing Santander, Xerez and Almeria.
