Riquelme, Alvarez to Atleti?

Atletico Madrid are linked with moves for Argentine attackers Juan Roman Riquelme and Ricky Alvarez today.

Riquelme, who previously spent five years in La Liga between Barcelona and Villarreal, is currently a free agent.

A source close to the 34-year-old is quoted in Argentine media as saying that the player is set to join a European club that is still competing in the Europa League.

Mundo Deportivo believe that there are three candidates for his signature this month – Levante, Benfica and Atletico, with the Spanish capital club thought to be interested due to Coach Diego Simeone’s affinity with Riquelme.

Simeone is believed to have previously tried to sign the player when he was in charge at Racing de Avellaneda, whilst Atleti thought they had signed the playmaker in 2007, only for the move to break down.

Meanwhile, Mediaset in Italy believe that Atleti have their sights set on Inter’s attacking midfielder Alvarez.

The left-sided 24-year-old, who carries an Italian passport, has struggled to hold down a regular spot with the Nerazzurri and Atleti are thought to be interested.

However, whilst Inter are understood to be happy to offload the player, Atleti would push, say reports in Italy, for a low-cost loan, with a similarly low €6m option inserted to make the deal permanent at the end of the season.
