Del Bosque: England good for Spanish

Vicente del Bosque is enthusiastic for having seen Spain’s players based in the Premier League this weekend, commenting on its worth for La Roja.

The national team Coach travelled out to England for the first time to catch live games between Everton and Swansea City and then Arsenal and Manchester City.

A number of Spanish nationals play in the English top flight and for Del Bosque there is great value to be found.

“The departure of Spanish players to other Leagues, and especially to the English League, has grown Spanish football and has been good for the national team,” commented the veteran to reporters after his trip.

“Already we have seen this with the evolution of Cesc Fabregas and this trend is now increasing.

“We have followed everyone in England via television and scouting reports that have come in on all the players. But, I’m very glad to have seen them live and how they all did.

“Many are deserving to be called up, but the fact is that competition is great and it is not easy to make space in La Seleccion.

“The problem is not in incorporating new people, but in leaving out those already there.”

The Coach was prompted for a word on Swansea City striker Michu.

“He plays in a position where we also have Iniesta, Mata and Silva, among others. Michu has merits, but the competition is what it is. Those players have been champions of Europe and the world.

“But that does not mean we’re ignoring the best performances, be from those playing in Spain, the Premier League, in Italy, in Germany or wherever they are based. It is great that our players are out there.”

Del Bosque’s Spain have a friendly in Doha against Uruguay coming up this February, before two crucial World Cup qualifiers against Finland and France in March.

“Now is not the time to think of those to take to Doha, typically it is a block in March that will have to push through to the qualifiers against Finland and France.”
