Zubi confirms Valdes talks

Barcelona sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta has confirmed that the club are in talks with goalkeeper Victor Valdes over a new deal.

Reports earlier this week indicated that the shot-stopper, who recently opened speculation on the situation, was set to be the first player at the club to sign a new deal this calendar year.

However, Sport believe today that those talks are not so advanced and, although progressing, are expected to be complicated and could continue for a while.

“We have held talks with his agent and with him they are on track. We are at a point contrary to the assertions being made,” Zubizarreta told reporters after Barcelona’s Copa del Rey victory over Cordoba.

“We had a lot of intensity in the game and we got the goals. We took the game very seriously from the start and that has been noted.

“We have managed a good pace and combinations. Cordoba pressed us very well.

“Now we have to play Malaga in the League and then focus on the Cup games against them too.

“They are a team that plays good football, they have experienced players, young players too and are ranked for the next phase of the Champions League.

“They are a rival to be reckoned with, they have given us a lot of good football this season.”
