Feghouli prioritises contract

Sofiane Feghouli has delayed leaving Spain for the Africa Cup of Nations so he can work out his contract renewal with Valencia.

Talks have been ongoing over an improved deal for the French-born Algeria international since the summer. After initially stalling, December saw negotiations progress and the player then publicly declare his desire to stay on.

Subsequently, the player has revealed that he has delayed joining up with the Algeria squad for their preparations for the Africa Cup of Nations in an attempt to put pen to paper on extending his contract until June 2016.

“I am in a dilemma. I have not extended my contract with Valencia and if I go before [it’s done] then I’d run the risk of reaching South Africa feeling psychologically bad about leaving my future in the air,” the recently-turned 23-year-old told Algerian media this week.

“My desire is to join the team a few days late, but at my physical and psychological peak, which means I will be able to give everything for my country as I have done every time I have played.

“I’m looking forward to playing in the Africa Cup of Nations.”
