Valencia concentrated under Valverde

Valencia striker Jonas has praised Coach Ernesto Valverde for bringing some consistency to the club’s performances.

Los Che are currently 9th after a topsy-turvy first half to the campaign which saw Mauricio Pellegrino sacked and replaced by Valverde.

“We had little time to work with the Coach, but straight away we won at Osasuna, and we know how hard it is to win there,” the Brazilian forward recalled at a media briefing today.

“We’ve won three games and lost one with him. There is a consistency that we did not have before, but the blame for that is also ours.

“Our concentration is better in every game. At a team like Valencia, if you want to reach your targets, you must keep winning. We are training hard after a week’s break.”

Jonas then spoke about his own personal aims for the year ahead.

“Last season was good for me, with lots of games and lots of minutes, so hopefully it stays that way. The most important thing when you start a year is not to have injuries. I’ll be there to help, growing slowly and working towards collective and individual goals.

“Individually I want to score more goals than last season. Collectively, we want to qualify for the Champions League. We have five months to get it right.”

The former Gremio man ended by discussing Fernando Gago’s potential move to Boca Juniors and Sofiane Feghouli’s contract negotiation talks.

“For me it is important Gago stays. He is a player of great quality, who we’re going to need this season.

“Feghouli is a young player of great quality and strength, who has all the features a great club would like to have. It’s important that he renews.”
