Deco: ‘Pep has invented nothing’

Former Barcelona midfielder Deco has reflected that Jose Mourinho is a better Coach than Pep Guardiola for having won at more than one club.

The creative midfielder was a member of Mourinho’s Champions League-winning Porto side of 2004, before leaving the Camp Nou just as Guardiola’s tenure as Coach began.

Speaking to RTP this week, the Brazilian-born Portuguese international currently playing for Fluminense explained which of the two he would prefer to win the 2012 FIFA Ballon d’Or award for Coach of the Year.

“Mourinho is the best Coach in the world because he has won everywhere and that is very difficult,” reflected the 35-year-old.

“He has to win the Ballon d’Or. Guardiola was a good Coach at Barcelona, but I will say that he invented nothing. To see his value it will be better to see him in other places, at other clubs.”

Deco spent four years between 2004 and 2008 at Barcelona and was asked what differences he saw between the team then and now.

“This team is the same as in my time. The only difference is Messi.”
