Espanyol midfielder Wakaso Mubarak will miss the forthcoming derby against city rivals Barcelona.
Los Pericos, third bottom of La Liga but on an improved run of form under new Coach Javier Aguirre, take on Barca at Camp Nou a week on Sunday.
Aguirre had hoped to be able to rely on Wakaso, a versatile midfielder who is the club’s third top appearance maker this season with 15 starts. The 22-year-old is set to participate in the African Nations Cup with Ghana, but Espanyol petitioned the Ghanaian FA to let the player hold off on joining up with his colleagues until January 6.
But the Cornella-El Prat outfit have now abandoned their petition and will release the ex-Villarreal man on January 4 as originally scheduled.
