Real Betis President Miguel Guillen has warned ‘there are economic lines we cannot pass’ in renewing the contract of Benat Extebarria.
The club from Seville have been striving without success to get prized midfielder Benat tied down to a new deal for most of the season, the Spanish international failing to give a definitive answer when quizzed on the issue before Christmas.
Los Verdiblancos are emerging from severe financial problems, something Guillen is ever mindful of.
“It is an issue that concerns us,” he stated at a ceremony marking the club’s new cooperation agreement with the Cajasol Foundation.
“At Betis, the situation is what it is. We are still in a difficult position, and we have competitors. One thing is clear – there are economic lines which we cannot cross under any circumstances. Given this, the negotiations and renewals can be complicated.”
The patron then looked back upon 2012, a year Betis have re-established theirselves in the top flight, and talked about the potential return of winger Jefferson Montero on loan.
“We ended 2012 on a very satisfactory note. It was difficult and rewarding. We have health and labour, which are two very necessary things.
“Montero? It’s a possibility. Right now the sports management are assessing it.”
