‘Teams do not fear the Mestalla’

Ricardo Costa has rued Valencia’s League form so far and reflected that teams now smell blood when visiting the Mestalla.

Los Che fell to a 1-0 reverse in front of their own fans for a seventh League defeat of the season already, to make this their worst start to a League season for 15 years.

“We need to take care and start winning games, because otherwise the objective of qualifying for the Champions League will become difficult,” warned the Portuguese international afterwards.

“The team right now is not okay. For certain, there are times in which a team can almost play with their eyes closed, but that is not now.

“Also, the teams that come to play here know that we are not at our best. This situation, with opponents attacking and pressing us so high up, complicates things and it is not easy to get results here.”

Fans whistled and waved white handkerchiefs during the weekend defeat in protest against President Manuel Llorente.

“We must be prepared to play under any pressure. We should only play in our minds with the idea that the fans only want us to get back to winning and being on top of the standings. We have to lift our heads and think to Friday’s game.

“This defeat? No game can be controlled for 90 minutes. Rayo had a penalty and the truth is that things are not going well for us.”
